On August 22, a seminar was held in Kobe, which focused on
the new agreement "Chesapeake 2000", or "C2K", This agreement is commited to protect and restore water quality, living resources, and vital habitats, while also promoting sound land use,stewardship,and community involvement and continues the cooperative approach from 1983 and the goals and due dates from 1987. In the seminar, three invited speakers from the US, Dr. Wayne Bell, Mr. David Carroll and Dr. Jane Nishida provided an outline to and the concept of the Chesapeake 2000 Agreement. the audience of some 100 peaple also enjoyed an open discussion with the speakers and the coordinator, Prof. Kumamoto.

Objectives:
More than 60% of the population of Asian and the Pacific region lives in coastal areas, and coastal marine ecosystems provide critical resources to support this population. However, due to increasing pressure, the coastal and marine ecosystems are degrading at an alarming rate. Protection and proper management of marine coastal ecosystems are essential elements for the rational use of coastal resources
and sustainable development.
