1971Governors and Mayors' Conference on the Environmental Protection of the Seto Inland Sea established to work for preservation of the environment of the Seto Inland Sea.
Constitution for Environmental Preservation of the Seto Inland Sea established.
1973Law on Temporary Measures for the Environmental Preservation of the Seto Inland Sea established and promulgated.
1976Law on Special Measures for the Environmental preservation of the Seto Inland Sea established and promulgated.
Association for Environmental Conservation of the Seto Inland Sea(now a private foundation)established to promote both public and private activities to preserve the environment of the Seto Inland Sea.
1987Group, including Dr.Ian Morris from the University of Maryland, visits Japan to study enclosed coastal seas. Exchange of views and discussions held with relevant domestic organizations.
Following discussions at the gubernatorial and mayoral levels, joint statement "Appeal '87 for the Creation of a new Seto Inland Sea" adopted.
1990First International Conference on the Environmental Management of Enclosed Coastal Seas(iEMECS '90)jconference held in Kobe through the sponsorship of the Environment Agency, the Governors and Mayors' Conference on the Environmental Protection of the Seto Inland Sea, the association for Environmental Conservation of the Seto Inland Sea, Hyogo Prefecture, the City of Kobe and the National Institute for Research Advancement(NIRA).
Training sessions held to train persons from developing countries in the techniques for environmental management of enclosed coastal seas. EMECS Newsletter published as a forum for the exchange of information.
1993Second International Conference on the Environmental Management of Enclosed Coastal Seas(EMECS '93)herd in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. Declaration of Principles adopted at the conference confirms the move to establish an international EMECS center.
1994Articles of the Association for Environmental Conservation of the Seto Inland Sea revised to include international activities pertaining to the environmental management of enclosed coastal seas.
National Found for Environmental Management of Enclosed Coastal Seas established to provide funds for this purpose.
International EMECS Center established in November.
1997The third International Conference on Environmental management of Enclosed Coastal Seas(EMECS '97)was held in Stockholm, Sweden as a joint conference with the seventh Stockholm water Symposium.
1999MEDCOAST99-EMECS99 Joint Conference was held over a period of four days from November 9 through November 12 at the Hotel Dedeman in Antalya, Turkey.
2000On April 1, 2000. New International EMECS Center had been granted by the Prince Minister of Japan.
