In the Seto Inland Sea, the fishery productivity per unit area is extremely high because of two main reasons. One is essential nutrient for growth of fish and shells are sufficiently supplied from the many rivers, another is extremely complex and semi-enclosed geographical feature with many islands, straits, open seas and big and small bays. Fish-species compositions of production in fishery and in aquaculture are shown in Figure 2-5 and 2-6, respectively.
Production of the coastal fishery amounts to about 600,000 ton in 1996. Trends of the fishery production and the fish-species composition of the production are shown in Figure 2-7 and 2-8, respectively.
The Seto Inland Sea Fishery Development Council (office: Seto Inland Sea Fishery Coordinate Office of Japanese Fishery Agency) has reported that there lives 22 species, 99 families, 2192 order in Seto Inland Sea, included some species which goes back and forth between the sea and rivers.
Aquaculture projects have been proceeded to compensate the deterioration of living environment of fish and shells caused by water pollution and decrease in marine forests and tidal flats. Recently, the aquaculture has produced highly.
