14th EMECS Conference
In the Closing Ceremony of the EMECS 13 Conference in September 2021 and in the “Report of the 13th International Conference on the Environmental Management of Enclosed Coastal Seas (EMECS13 Conference)” in the EMECS Newsletter No. 43, we announced that the next EMECS Conference (EMECS 14) would be held in Murmansk, Russian Federation in September 2024, but due to the current international situation, we have decided to cancel the conference in Russia.
We are currently considering a new venue, schedule, etc., and will announce them on our website and in our e-mail newsletter as soon as they are decided.

Overview of the conference
The International EMECS Center (EMECS), in collaboration with the UK-based organization, Estuarine and Coastal Science Association (ECSA), co-hosted the 13thInternational Conference on the Environmental Management of Enclosed Coastal Seas (EMECS13) as the “ECSA58-EMECS13 Conference”, which was held online for four days from September 6 to September 9, 2021.
The conference was held under the theme of “Estuaries and coastal seas in the Anthropocene: Structure, functions, services, and management” and was attended by 450 researchers and government officials etc. from 47 countries. 58 people from Japan, including Prof. Motoyuki Suzuki, President of the EMECS Center, Prof. Osamu Matsuda, Vice-Chair of Board of Directors of the EMECS Center, and other researchers related to enclosed seas, coastal areas, and estuaries, participated in the conference.
The three special sessions organized by the EMECS Center, “ICM (Integrated Coastal Management) and Satoumi Session,” “Plastics in the sea session” and “Students and Schools Partnership Session,” were held in hybrid format (online and onsite) at the Kobe Portopia Hotel. The presenters in Japan could give presentations at the venue and the general public was able to view the online streaming.

Overview of the conference
The 12th EMECS Conference, EMECS12, was held under the theme of “Cooperative stewardship for integrated management toward resilient coastal seas” in Pattaya, Thailand. Approximately 300 people from 17 countries including Japan, Thailand, China, Republic of Korea, U.S.A. , participated in the Conference. From Japan, around 90 people including Toshizo Ido, Chair of EMECS Board of Directors (Governor of Hyogo Prefecture, Japan), Motoyuki Suzuki, EMECS President, a delegation from the Hyogo Prefectural Assembly headed by Takanori Konishi, Vice-Chair, attended the conference. During the conference, the Satoumi & ICM Special Session, parallel sessions under various themes, the Students & Schools Partnership Session, the poster session, the technical tour were held. The Pattaya Declaration and the Students & Schools Partnership Declaration were adopted at the closing session. Also, it was officially announced that the next EMECS Conference, EMECS13, will be held with the Estuarine & Coastal Sciences Association (ECSA) as “EMECS13 – ECSA58 Joint Conference” in Hull, U.K., in September 2020.

Overview of the conference
The International EMECS Center held the 11th International Conference on the Environmental Management of Enclosed Coastal Seas (EMECS 11) in the city of Saint Petersburg in the Russian Federation, as a joint conference with the “Sea Coasts” Working Group of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The theme of the conference was “Managing Risks to Coastal Regions and Communities in a Changing World,” and the conference was attended by 365 researchers and other interested parties from 21 countries around the world. From Japan, some 80 researchers and others involved in research into enclosed coastal sea environments attended the conference, including Vice-Governor of Hyogo Prefecture Kazuo Kanazawa, International EMECS Center President Motoyuki Suzuki and a group from the Hyogo Prefectural Assembly headed by Vice-Chair Hyakuo Fujimoto.
Following the opening ceremony and the plenary session, the conference featured the ICM and Satoumi Special Session, individual sessions at three different venues and a Students and Schools Partnership (SSP) session. 130 oral presentations and 116 poster presentations were given at the conference.
At the closing ceremony, the Saint Petersburg Declaration and the Students and Schools Partnership Declaration were adopted. In addition, it was announced that the next EMECS Conference, EMECS 12, will be held in 2018 in Pattaya, Thailand.
In addition to the formal conference events, a city tour was held on the afternoon of August 25, and a technical excursion to the Flood Protection Barrier and the city of Kronshtadt was held on the final day, August 27.

Overview of the conference
2001年11月19日(月)から22日(木)、神戸市・淡路において、環境省・兵庫県・神戸市・財団法人国際エメックスセンターにより開催された。会議には、国内・海外から41ヶ国から延べ2,000名(参加登録数1,100名)を越える参加者が参加しました。
会議では、まず開会式が行われ、秋篠宮、同妃両殿下のご臨席のもと、近藤次郎実行委員会会長の開会挨拶、川口順子環境大臣の主催者挨拶の後、ヨーカ・ウォーラーハンター経済協力開発機構(OECD)環境局長による基調講演、安藤忠雄東京大学教授(建築家)、貝原俊民(財)兵庫地域政策研究機構理事長(前兵庫県知事)の特別講演が行われた。2日目より分科会、特別セッションが設定され、閉鎖性海域における国内外の様々な問題を取り上げられ、参加者による熱心な議論が進められた。

Overview of the conference
The third EMECS Conference was a joint conference with the 7th Stockholm Water Symposium. The joint conference was held in Stockholm, Sweden, a city that has been called the “water capital” of northern Europe. This was the first conference to be cosponsored by the International EMECS Center, which was established in 1994 following the success of the first two EMECS Conferences.The theme of the conference was “With Rivers to the Sea:Interaction of Land Activities, Fresh Water and Enclosed Coastal Seas”. One thousand delegates from 80 countries,including researchers in the fields of both fresh and ocean water, government officials, and representatives from NGO organizations went beyond the confines of their individual specialties and forged ties by debating such topics as the flow of nutrients from land to sea, the function of fresh water in transporting harmful pollutants, and the relationship between land utilization and water quality.

Following the success of EMECS ’90, the mantle was taken up by the State of Maryland in the United States. The second EMECS conference, EMECS ’93, was held in the city of Baltimore on the shores of Chesapeake Bay, one of the foremost enclosed coastal seas in the U.S. The theme of the conference was “Toward Effective Governance” — employing science, policy and management to preserve the environment in coastal areas.
